Lever Drag reels:

Maintenance advice

Suggested basic maintenance
guidelines for optimum performance.

  • To keep your reel working at peak performance, we recommend a light freshwater rinse following every fishing trip to remove salt and other foreign materials. Gently wipe away all moisture with a soft clean towel.

  • In order to better protect your drag system, it is recommended that you engage your drag lever to the "strike position" whenever you rinse your reel.

  • By compressing the drag washer and drag plate, you are eliminating any gap for water to accumulate.

  • Do not submerge or use a hard direct spray of freshwater on the reel as this can drive debris such as salt, sand, oils and many other contaminants into the core of your reel. This type of misuse will leave your reel's internal parts to be exposed to standing water that can lead to future problems.

  • After you have performed the freshwater rinse it is recommended that you lightly spray your your reel with a water displacing lubricant to protect the exterior of your reel. This helps take away the smallest amounts of water and will form a barrier between your reel and corrosive elements.

  • It is important to completely back off your drag when storing the reel.

  • It is recommended that your reel be professionally serviced at least once a year. This service should include greasing both the main and pinion gears, along with checking that your drag washers have a thin layer of Okuma drag grease. Drag grease allows your reel to perform smoothly and dissipate heat faster while fighting fast running fish.

  • During the service, you should also oil the drive shaft, handle nut, clicker switch, the spool shaft pin and the side plate screws.

  • If you perform all these recommended proceedures, your reel should last many years.
